Johnson & Johnson Exits LAA Closure Market, Sells Laminar Biz to Startup

J&J acquired Laminar and its laminar left atrial appendage elimination system in 2023 for about $400 million.

Privately held medical device company Jaguar LAA revealed that it’s acquired key Laminar assets from Johnson & Johnson for an undisclosed amount.

J&J acquired Laminar in 2023 for a purchase price of about $400 million. The company develops technology that addresses the left atrial appendage (LAA) in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AFib).

J&J began cases in its pivotal IDE study for the investigational laminar left atrial appendage elimination (LAAX) system in early 2024. The trial, which was suspended in mid-2025, sought to compare the implant to Boston Scientific’s Watchman and Abbott’s Amulet LAA closure devices.

The Laminar program uses a catheter-based approach and rotational motion to close and eliminate the LAA, leaving minimal device exposure in the left atrium.

“We believe the Laminar technology offers a differentiated approach to LAA closure, particularly through its ability to leave minimal device exposure within the left atrium,” said Jason Rogers, Jaguar’s chief medical officer. “We are excited to continue the work behind the program and explore its potential to provide an important new treatment option for patients with atrial fibrillation.”

Jaguar was formed by Santé Ventures and members of Laminar’s management team, with Santé, management, and other investors leading its financing and acquisition from Johnson & Johnson.
